Giving Away Books

I've written before about children's ebooks, and I was pleased to find this site:  http://www.wegivebooks.org/

It's got a double benefit - not only do I get to read classic children's books online with my daughter, we get to choose a charitable campaign that the publisher will donate a book to for each book we read!  Way cool...

Free Planet Earth Episode!

Planet Earth, a top-rated documentary series, is now available on iTunes!  And if you're a US resident, you can download the first episode in the 11-part series, "Pole to Pole," for free in your choice of SD or HD format - from April 12 - 26, 2010.

We don't have TV reception where we live, so I haven't experienced the show yet, but everything I've read about this series is terrific.  "Series producer Alastair Fothergill and his team spent four years in production, over 2000 days in the field, using 71 cameramen filming across 204 locations in 62 countries to capture the ultimate portrait of our planet."  This is definitely something I will be downloading to help celebrate Earth Day.

I don't know for sure how the series might conflict with a 6-day-creation perspective - (I personally don't believe in trying to shelter my daughter from the billions-of-years world view, but rather helping her understand and deal with it) - but the Christian reviews I've read state that the emphasis of the show is the breathtaking natural beauty of our planet.  What better way to illustrate the awesomeness of its Creator?!

Children's Ebooks

For a change of pace, I let my daughter use "her" laptop to read ebooks from time to time.  I've got a folder of downloaded ebooks on the desktop, and she's pretty much got those books memorized.

So it's nice to add a few!  I've been busy downloading free ebooks from the Children's Books Forever site tonight.

It's even better when the books have audio to go with them, and a little animation helps, too!  Kidthing has some Dr. Seuss books available for download through March 31, 2010.  Unfortunately, we haven't had much success in getting them to play, but we're still working on it.

Another source is Wizz-E.  We actually won a few of their ebooks and are enjoying those, but they also have a couple of freebies.

Any other good kids' ebook sources out there?  Moms of bored pink-eyed kids want to know...
