What I Liked:
- Easy to understand. The book is written in a straightforward way – not condescending, yet easy for someone who isn’t a health or nutrition expert to follow. Simple illustrations make concepts even easier to understand.
- Well-organized. I found myself using this as a reference book, and it is nice to be able to easily flip back and forth to the areas that were relevant at any given time. The glossary and index are helpful as well.
- Easy to relate to. I’ve struggled with chronic fatigue for several years, and it was VERY easy to identify my body type and the corresponding issues I’ve been experiencing. It made me feel the book was written just for me! There were explanations for many of the issues I’ve experienced, such as not being able to lose weight when on an exercise program.
- Emphasis in the right place. ”It’s not "’Lose weight to get healthy.’ It’s ‘Get healthy to lose weight!’” One thing I have been particularly struggling with is not feeling well enough, not having the energy, to make the effort for weight loss. People say I’m just not trying hard enough, but I can’t summon the energy to try any harder! This book explains the need to get that energy, the healthy feeling, before undertaking the fat burning. And with healthiness as the goal, the weight loss “mountain” doesn’t seem as insurmountable.
Did I lose weight? About two pounds in the first two weeks. I was really hoping for more. I’m still trying to find the balance. Having been a vegetarian all my life, I’ve relied a lot on grains in my diet The recommendations in this book cut out those grain carbs. The first two weeks, I followed the recommendations closely and found myself, no matter how much veggie/fruit/nuts I ate, along with limited dairy protein, still craving the carbs. I succumbed after two weeks and ate a bowl of shredded wheat. And it felt SO good! I felt satisfied for the first time in two weeks! I really wish I could have a little chat with the book author to dissect that experience.
In general, though, I’ve enjoyed the book and the program. I was able to cut down caffeine and cut out the unhealthy stuff I had been relying on for energy, and I’ve discovered a better understanding of how different foods impact my body, really feeling it for the first time without the haze of simple carbs.
